To train individuals to safely operate fire service vehicles and manage fire pumps and associated systems during firefighting and rescue operations. This role is vital in ensuring timely response and effective water supply management at fire scenes.
3 to 6 Months
(Short-term certificate course, depending on institute and curriculum)
Educational Qualification: Minimum 10th pass
Driving License: Valid Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) Driving License required
Desirable:
Basic knowledge of mechanical systems
Prior firefighting training (preferred)
Physical Fitness: Required (eye sight, hearing, stamina, medical fitness as per fire service norms)
Introduction to fire and its behavior
Fire classification and extinguishing media
Role of a driver cum pump operator at fire scenes
Driving and maneuvering of fire tenders
Preventive and routine maintenance of fire vehicles
Refueling, electrical, and hydraulic system checks
Types of fire pumps (centrifugal, portable, high-pressure)
Priming, water source selection, and flow rate management
Suction and delivery line operations
Deployment and rolling of hoses
Coupling, nozzle, and hydrant operations
Use of portable extinguishers and small gear
Radio communication and codes
Coordination with fire officers during emergencies
Record keeping and log maintenance
Driving under emergency conditions
Scene safety and vehicle positioning
Responding to vehicle failures or pump malfunctions
Real-time fire tender driving
Pump operations during mock drills
Water relay, tank refill, and foam proportioning
Live vehicle driving tests
On-ground pump operations under supervision
Hose laying and water relay practice

Fire academies under municipalities, airports, ports, and defense establishments
Driver cum Pump Operator in:
Municipal Fire Departments
Industrial Fire Brigades
Airports (AAI, private airports)

Participants receive a Certificate of Competency as Driver cum Pump Operator, recognized by:
State/Local Fire Authorities
Industrial Fire Safety Standards
Defense or Airport Fire Services (if aligned)
Proficient fire vehicle driver
Skilled in water supply and pump pressure management
Able to support fire crews in critical operational settings
